"An Evening of Scots Gaelic" ("Feasgar Gaidhlig")

The Scottish Gaelic language was the most prominent minority language ever spoken by an emigrant group in the Carolinas until the 20th century. It was spoken by a large majority of the emigrant Highlanders who settled in the Upper Cape Fear and Upper Pee Dee regions.

You may have heard Gaelic on the TV Series "Outlander". It is the native language of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. This concert will be a delight to those familiar with Scots Gaelic as well as give a taste of the language and its associated musical traditions to those who are not familiar. Come hear the language that was spoken in churches and homes in this region during the 18th and 19th centuries and even as late as the early years of the 20th century.

Featured performers will include 2023 USA Tartan Day Mod winner Cynthian Knight and 2024 USA Tartan Day Mod willer Sean Heely performing Gaelic songs as well as music from the Gaelic tradition by accompanists including pipers, fiddlers, and other instrumentalists, along with recitations and translations of Gaelic songs and poetry composed in North Carolina in the 18th century.

Tiugainn! ("let's go" or "y'all come" in Scottish Gaelic)

The Saturday Evening Concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. on October 5th in the Avinger Auditorium at St. Andrews University.
